5 Tips To Consider When Using Multiple Colors When Painting A Room In Your Home

Designing a new room but can’t choose a color? Who says you have to pick just one? Painting a room multiple colors is becoming a popular trend among well-known interior designers, and bringing the trend into your own home is easy when you know what to consider!

Palette

When painting a room more than two colors, consider sticking to one palette: warm or cold. The warm palette includes red, orange, and yellow hues. Whereas, the cold palette includes blue, purple, and green hues. Colors from the same palette coordinate easily and make decorating afterward a snap. They also work well together in creating a tone that sets the mood for the room you’re designing (ie. choose a cold palette for a calming mood).

The Ceiling

Painting the ceiling a color other than white is a great way to bring life to a room. Play with shades and complementary colors, and remember, the lighter the ceiling, the bigger the room will look. Always paint the ceiling a shade lighter than you intend, as adding an additional coat is simpler than moving back to square one with white primer paint.

Try an Accent Wall

If you’re working with a smaller room, consider using an accent wall. For example, paint three of the walls a light shade of turquoise and the fourth wall a bolder shade. You could also mix complementary colors. For example, consider painting a room light yellow with a powder blue accent wall. Colors opposite the color wheel work well together in moderation.

50 Shades of Gray

Consider using different shades of the same color. For example, paint each wall a shade of violet, or paint the walls a darker shade of violet while leaving the baseboards a lighter, more feminine wisp of the same shade. Different shades of the same color create depth in a room and can spice up a small space

Borders

Now, many people are against using borders in a room, but in truth, when applied properly, a border can really tie the walls together. Use a darker color beneath the boarder and a lighter color (either a lighter shade of the same color or a lighter shade of a complementary color) above the border. This technique is great for kids’ rooms and offices and is a fun alternative to one solid color.

Painting a room is a unique experience. You’re taking a piece of your own personality and splashing it on the wall. Student Works Painting is one of the painting companies in Vancouver and they have said that combining colors in the right way can transform your walls from drab to daring and fabulous. So, the next time you decide to repaint a room in your house and are face with the question: “What Color?!” Why limit yourself?
