Brighten Any Room With These Five Decorating Tips
We’ve all had the experience of trying to turn a dark, cluttered room into a bright, welcoming space. Often, such a transformation is easier said than done, although there are many people who can seemingly pull it off effortlessly. Are you one of those people? If so, congratulations! If not, please read on for some useful hints for brightening up that problem room.
1. Bring in Some Plants
Greenery, whether real or artificial, is a great way to improve the look of your room. Whether you are an avid gardener who brings in fresh cut flowers every day, or you use settings of fake silk flowers, plants will open up your space and make it more inviting. One reminder, however – if the room does not have good light make sure that you use either low-light plants like ferns or silk flowers.
2. Repaint the Walls
Repainting is one of the most cost-effective changes you can make. For the cost several gallons of paint (and primer if needed) you can totally transform the appearance of a room. For maximum brightness, paint the walls white or another bright color. You will be amazed at the difference paint can make.
3. Add Mirrors
Mirrors improve your room in two ways – they reflect and amplify light, and create the illusion that the room is bigger than it is. Place your mirrors to catch as much natural light as possible. You can be very creative with mirrors by using products such as mirror tile or arranging multiple small mirrors on a wall instead of one large mirror.
4. New Flooring
If you think your room needs brightening up, chances are that is has dark carpeting. Dark carpeting does not reflect light and absorbs odors. Over time, old carpet becomes musty and makes the room seem depressing. Rip out the old carpet and replace it with polished hardwood, or with laminate if you are on a budget. The difference will be amazing! Decorate the floor with some brightly colored area rugs if you like.
5. Get Rid of Clutter
Nothing says dark and crowded more than lots of stuff lying around the room. If your bedroom or guest room looks more a storeroom, it is time to clean up. Put the collectibles and unfinished projects away for a clean, uncluttered look.
