Is Building a Garage For Your Property Worth It?

Looking at blueprintsWhen it comes to deciding which home renovations and remodels are worth your time and money, there are a lot of different projects to choose from and factors to consider. If your home is older, it’s possible that when you bought it, it didn’t have a garage. A lot of homes older than 50 years have carports, instead of garages. Some don’t even have a car port, and instead have a simple driveway or limited street parking available instead. Building a garage onto your property could potentially be incredibly valuable to you and your home.

Cost to build a garage

There are two different types of garages that you could potentially add to your home. Attached garages, and detached garages. A detached garage is going to be the least expensive option, but you’ll have to keep in mind that the very meaning of a detached garage means that you won’t have access to it from the interior of your home. You’ll also potentially need more space to build a detached garage, as you’ll have to have room between your home and the garage, rather than them being built flush with one another.

Depending on the size you are looking for, a detached garage will cost you a minimum of $2,500(for a 12 ft by 16 ft prepped garage kit that doesn’t include windows, doors, or flooring). Once you add in the cost for flooring, windows, and doors, you’re looking at well over $3000 for a small garage.

For a single car garage that is attached to your home, you can expect to pay about $7,500, and the cost will go up from there, depending on how large of a garage you’re wanting and what the features you’re hoping to add on are.

Why do you want a garage?

There are lots of different reasons for wanting a garage. The main purpose, is the convenience. Having a garage is a convenience that we often take for granted. It’s a safe place to store your car, which can prevent damage and mechanical strain on your car, meaning that you’ll be dealing with things like a stalled engine less often. It’s also an ideal location for your lawn equipment, seasonal items, and a number of other valuable items. You can view it as not only a great storage area, but a phenomenal source of added security for your home. One of the most valuable reasons to add a garage onto your home, is the added value that it brings to your home. If you ever plan on re-selling your home, not having a garage may be a dealbreaker to some of your ideal home buyers. By spending the time and money to add a garage onto your home now, you’ll be adding value onto your home that will make it possible for you to sell your home for much more, and rent it easier in the meantime.

How to build a garage properly

This is a more affordable option and it will save you the trouble of having to plan and build the garage yourself, or hiring someone to do it for you. This option, however, leaves very little room for customization. The only things that you’ll be able to customize, are the windows, doors, and floors. These are things that will affect the overall aesthetic of your garage, but won’t really affect the functionality of it.

You also have the option to hire help (or do it yourself, if you’re particularly handy) to build a garage for you. This garage can be either attached or detached, and really is a matter of personal preference and what would work better for you and the layout of your home.
